Then the phone started ringing. Copperas Cove, Killeen, Harker Heights, and as far as Florence, Nolanville, Temple and Belton: more than 250 of them, from families with burst pipes and no water.

The roads were still iced over on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Bubba rode along with his brother, house by house, fixing what he could as soon as the pipes thawed.

By Saturday, Centex had two trucks splitting the area between Cove, Killeen and Harker Heights, ready to work all weekend to help everybody.

Bubba's tip: listen for running water when no taps are on. A leak inside the wall can be spraying the sheetrock.
